Our Story
Founders John and Ann Therrien started Community Homes in 1995. They bought the first house for their daughter, Jenny, and four other women. John and Ann became our first Care Providers. The Therrien’s wanted a reproducible and sustainable operational model providing quality housing for other adults with disabilities.
The Community Homes model is unique. Community Homes purchases and rehabilitates houses to serve as Adult Family Homes (AFHs). The house is leased to individual Care Providers at below-market rates. Our Care Providers contract directly with the state to provide Medicaid Personal Care services to the residents.
Community Homes provides guidance and best practices for the Care Providers, supporting them through the licensing process, providing training, and creating the required documentation to run an AFH. We provide on-going assistance to Care Providers as well as property maintenance.
Houses are purchased with donations and grants, rather than loans. This allows houses to be self-supporting, with residents’ room and board payments covering the usual costs of running the houses.
The Community Homes model allows us to recruit the best Care Providers. Care Providers are carefully selected for their ability to make a long-term commitment, and for their personal dedication in supporting residents’ independence and growth. Our goal is to have a durable, family-like environment, where Care Providers and residents form a strong bond, and where residents feel secure and able to learn and grow to their fullest potential.
Community Homes now owns six houses in east King Country. Five houses are operational serving twenty-five residents. Our sixth house is being remodeled for opening in late 2009.
The Community Homes model has proven itself, and we continue building on the Therriens’ original vision as we look to the future.
